Kimball has been proactive in the integration of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology into the aviation environment. GIS is a map-based automation tool designed to present information from a variety of sources in a user-friendly manner, which assists in decision-making and saves time. GIS incorporates database management systems that gives aviation professionals the ability to associate information with a feature on a map and create new information. A GIS application supports the overall operation of an airport through the development of a GIS base map. This meets the requirements of FAA standards, as presented in Advisory Circular 150/5300-18. The end product will be enhanced overall safety, regulatory compliance, and increased airport efficiency by automating many FAA and state funding agency safety and maintenance standards.
