Airport GIS Development

Kimball has been proactive in the integration of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology into the aviation environment.  GIS is a map-based automation tool designed to present information from a variety of sources in a user-friendly manner, which assists in decision-making and saves time.  GIS incorporates database management systems that gives aviation professionals the ability to associate information with a feature on a map and create new information.

A GIS application supports the overall operation of an airport through the development of a GIS base map. This meets the requirements of FAA standards, as presented in Advisory Circular 150/5300-18.  The end product will be enhanced overall safety, regulatory compliance, and increased airport efficiency by automating many FAA and state funding agency safety and maintenance standards.  Each of the following applications could be developed and used independently or with others:

  • Utilities/facilities management applications
  • Building information management systems
  • Airspace and obstruction analysis
  • Airport surface analysis supporting new instrument procedure development
  • Property management applications
  • Pavement management systems
  • Airport GIS standards development
  • Airport layout plan development and management
  • Airport self inspection programs
  • Customized applications
